CELTIC PRIDE ZOEY Mod by 'Viscupelo' [Steam ID: Viscupelo]

This is my first mod. Ever. For any game. Seriously, I've never done anything like this before. If you'd asked me what a normal map was 2 days ago, I would have thought you meant an atlas.

Therefore, any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated.

So, this skin basically came about because I happened upon FPSBANANA, looking for some interesting skins to liven up L4D. I started having a read, thought I'd give it a go, and I'm having a blast. I started off by just wanting to create a Red-headed version of Zoey. Eventually, I decided to change the skin too, since it didn't look quite right with the new hair.

Next thing you knew, I was off on an Irish-American/Celtic Theme.

I'll probably keep tweaking it for a while yet, but like I've said, this is the first time I've done anything like this, so any feedback or advice is welcome!

FEATURES:
- Red hair and appropriately pale skin (complete with freckles).
- Green 'Guinness' Branded St.Patrick's Day Hoodie (nice change, but still manages stands out from the horde during the panic).
- Other tweaks: cut lip, black eye, scratches on knuckles and hands, dirty finger nails, lightened jeans, bite mark on neck, gold tooth, logo on shoes, some minor tweaks to some colours.
- Celtic tattoos; one on each index finger, and one behind the left ear.
- Revised Specular and Normal Maps.

IN THIS PACK, YOU SHOULD HAVE:
- Mod Texture File named 'teenangst'
- Modifed 'pak01_dir.vpk' file
- Modified 'whitelist.cfg' file
- Delicious Screenshots

Ok, to get this skin installed if this is your FIRST or ONLY MOD (if not, skip down for intructions to add another mod);

1) Firstly, head into your Steam folder make some back ups of the following files:

Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\pak01_dir.vpk AND whitelist.cfg

Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\materials\models\survivors\teenangst (the whole folder, if it isn't there to begin with, then don't worry about it)

At least if you mess something up during the installation, you can reinstall the original files.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) In the pack you've unzipped, copy the folder named 'teenangst' and place it in the same location as the one you should have backed up earlier.

Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\materials\models\survivors

Overwrite anything, if you copied the originals when you backed them up.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) Take the modified 'pak01_dir.vpk' and 'whitelist.cfg' from my pack and put them here:

Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead

Replacing the ones you also should have backed up somewhere safe.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) Start the game up and enjoy, if you did everything correctly, it should be running like a charm.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ACHTUNG! IF YOU'VE ALREADY GOT ANOTHER MOD INSTALLED

If you've already installed a modified 'pak01_dir.vpk' and 'whitelist.cfg' with a previous mod?
You're in for the fun and exciting task of modifying the 'pako1_dir.vpk' file you've already got.
Install the 'teenangst' folder as per the instruction above, but, for the love of all that is holy,
DO NOT replace any current modified pak01_dir file with the one I've provided, or you'll break everything and it'll be your fault, you silly person you.

I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU LOOK UP ONE OF THE TUTORIALS ON FPSBANANA.COM SO YOU KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOU'RE DOING BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO MERGE MODS!

OK, first you're going to need Notepad++.

Download link:
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

Install this delicious piece of awesome, then use it on your current 'pak01_dir.vpk' file in your left4dead folder.

Now, what you're going to have to do is search the file for the lines that allocate which files to use for textures,
and change them so the game uses the ones you want it to use (this is exactly how you can make your own mod, so it's worth knowing).

Press CTRL+F, this will bring up the search function.

Use the search function to locate these sections (double check very carefully that they are the correct sections!) and edit them to look like this:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[MAKE SURE IT'S THE RIGHT SECTION, THEN ADD THE '2' TO THE END OF THE FILE NAME, SO FROM zoey_color ---> zoey_color2]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

zoey_color
{

$baseTexture "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_color2"
$bumpmap "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_normal2"
$phong 1
$phongboost "1.5"
$phongexponent 5
$phongtint "[.85 .85 1]"
$phongfresnelranges "[.5 .85 30]"
$ambientocclusion 1
}

zoey_head
{

$basetexture "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_head2"
$compress "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_head_compress"
$stretch "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_head_compress"
$bumpmap "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_head_normal2"
$phong 1
$phongboost 1
$phongexponent 5
$phongtint "[1 .85 .85]"
$phongfresnelranges "[.5 .85 30]"
$nodecal 1
$ambientocclusion 1
}

zoey_hair
{

include "materials/models/survivors/survivors_it_shared.vmt"
insert
{
$baseTexture "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_hair2"
$translucent 1
$nocull 1
}
}
zoey_head
{

$basetexture "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_head2"
$compress "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_head_compress"
$stretch "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_head_compress"
$bumpmap "models\survivors\TeenAngst/zoey_head_normal2"
$phong 1
$phongboost 1
$phongexponent 5
$phongtint "[1 .85 .85]"
$phongfresnelranges "[.5 .85 30]"
$nodecal 1
$ambientocclusion 1
}

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you've done everything correctly, edited the right sections, and placed the custom 'teenangst' folder in the correct spot, should run fine.

~ENJOY, AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK~
